Actress Lily Collins is in early talks to play Edith Bratt opposite Nicholas Hoult in the upcoming J.R.R. Tolkien biopic Tolkien, which will explore the early life of the famed author known for his fantasy epics The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and Middle-earth stories during the horrors of World War I.
When it was announced a couple of months ago that actor Nicholas Hoult was in talks to play Tolkien in the biopic written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford and directed by Dome Karukoski, Lord of the Rings fans were eager to see who would be cast as Tolkien’s love interest and eventual wife Edith Bratt - the woman who inspired the elven princess character Lúthien in Tolkien’s recently published epic love story The Tale of Beren and Lúthien as well as Arwen from The Lord of the Rings.
Now in a recent announcement by THR, Lily Collins is in talks to play Bratt in Tolkien. Collins is a British-American actress, model and writer and the daughter of English musician Phil Collins.
The life story of Tolkien very much inspired his works like The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and the biopic is sure to explore the love, friendships and drama Tolkien experienced as a young man before he became the famed author we all know today. Similar to the adventures of the hobbits-turned-heroes Frodo, Samwise, Pippin and Merry, Tolkien also had his own band of lifelong friends including Rob Gilson, Geoffrey Bache Smith and Christopher Wiseman, while he attended the King Edward’s School. He also met his future wife Edith at the age of 16, years later the pair were married but shortly after Tolkien was commissioned as a second lieutenant with the British Expeditionary Force when World War I broke out. Although Tolkien survived the war and was inspired to write his greatest works in the trenches, he lost many friends from his “fellowship” and was greatly affected afterwards.
