The Thick Of It ran for four short seasons and two hour-long specials that aired sporadically between 2005 and 2012, with several storylines mirroring real-life events in British politics like the Leveson inquiry or the David Cameron/Nick Clegg coalition. The show won five BAFTAs over its four-season run and spawned the feature-length spin-off movie In The Loop in 2009. Starring original The Thick Of It cast members including Peter Capaldi and Chris Addison alongside American actors including James Gandolfini and Veep’s Anna Chlumsky, the film satirized US-UK political relations with a focus on the invasion of Iraq.
Not a Netflix, Hulu or Prime member? Fear not; all four seasons of The Thick Of It are easily available to rent or buy via iTunes, the Microsoft Store, YouTube, and Vudu. The Microsoft Store, iTunes, and YouTube also offer the show’s spin-off feature In The Loop for rental or purchase as does Google Play.
Interestingly, American political comedy series Veep – also created by Armando Iannucci – was born from The Thick Of It in a way. After the series caught the eye of TV execs across the pond, attempts were made to adapt The Thick Of It for ABC but the network decided not to pick up the show. However, HBO expressed interest in having Iannucci helm a show like the British version of The Thick Of It which eventually became the similarly-toned Veep.
